Since the debut of the butter board trend and the popularity of charcuterie boards, new variations have emerged. One of these variations is called the buttercream or frosting board. But instead of smearing frosting all over a board to then scoop up with sweet treats and fruits, this board is everything you need to decorate cupcakes and cookies and have a ton of fun while doing it.

Let your child be part of planning what to include in your board. It will be as much fun to plan and shop for as it will be to build and eat!!

Keep the list simple and coordinate the buttercream board with your napkins, candles, plates, and cutlery. No need to get complicated with piping bags. For kids, a plastic knife and a bowl of icing will do.

Large plain board or serving tray - No need to buy one, hunt around your home or borrow one from family or friends.

Small bowls - These can be white, clear, or colored. See what you have or buy some, as they come in so handy if they have the accompanying lids.

Candies - Get these from your favorite grocery store, bulk store, or dollar store. The sky is the limit for the candies that you can add to your board.

Sprinkles - Find your favorite sprinkles, jimmies, nonpareils, crystal sugar, dragees, chocolate chips, etc. Craft stores carry a variety of these, too; grocery stores seem to be, for the most part, limited.

Fruit - Add some healthy additions to this board with fruit like blueberries, strawberries, mandarin oranges, little sliced kiwi fruits, etc.

Plain Sugar Cookies - You can buy these from a local grocery store or bakery or make your own with this Sugar Cookie Recipe.

Cupcakes - Again, these can be purchased but so easily baked too. Here is a great roundup of Cupcake Recipes for you to choose from, or buy a packaged mix of your favorite flavor and bake those up in mini and large cupcakes.

Frosting - And the best part is the buttercream. I have a variety of choices for you, but again, if you are pressed for time, you can use store-bought and color them yourself. I like to use gel food colors the best, as you can get some vibrant colors.

Here is my list of frostings for you to try. Plain vanilla works great when coloring the frosting, but don't forget the chocolate!! You can also add other flavors of extract if you like too.

Start by placing your bowls of frosting on the tray or board and then line up your cookies and stack your cupcakes in corners. Add your bowls of sprinkles, and then finally, fill in the spaces with candies and fruit. If your board or tray isn't big enough, then continue on with small bowls outside of your tray or board.

Add paper plates, napkins, and plastic cutlery, and have everyone dig in for fun!!

Want to amuse the kids over the holidays? Create a Christmas Tree out of cupcakes and have them decorate as they wish. Add green food coloring to the icing and have them adorn the decorations on the tree. Cookie decorating is fun with icing and sprinkles too!

You can also do this with a fall theme for Thanksgiving or after a skating party with hot cocoa. Think of Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, or whenever people gather. Young and old would love to make their own dessert in the spirit of fun with family and friends.
